missouri state university address Visit with Henry Gore - Part 3 - Shannon County Film Digitization Project

Camera roll 164 is the third of five rolls (162, 163, 164, 165, 166) recording a visit with Henry Gore on Nov. 10, 1978. Interviewer was Lynn Morrow. Henry was the last man left on Blair's Creek, a remote region of Shannon County, Mo. that had once been a thriving community and childhood home to many of the county's senior citizens. Henry had lived on Blair's Creek all of his life, far from any roads and miles from his nearest neighbor in a house that had no electricity or running water. Len Bolin, who took us to meet Henry and who appears in the film, referred to Henry as the "keeper of Blair's Creek, the last one left." Of special note is the way in which Henry speaks. Intelligent and articulate, Henry often uses archaic terms and phraseology that border on the poetic. Also of note is the level of detail he uses in his descriptions. In camera roll 164, Henry shows us his newborn puppies; reveals his feelings about being a bachelor and living alone; talks about his smoking habit and "our Prince Albert" (tobacco); shows us his spring house and his spring that's never run dry, and more about working in the timber and farming.
