Dementia has been halted in mice brains by a Duke University research team who stopped the development of the disease by adjusting the brain’s immune system to stop the cells from attacking nutrients. The scientists blocked certain enzymes to stop some immune cells from breaking down an amino acid known as arginine. Mice who underwent the treatment performed better on memory and other tests. One of the researchers, Dr Matthew Kan, said that the study offers hope that the findings could lead to new treatments for dementia and maybe even Alzheimer's disease.
